Cardboard Recycling: Key Steps

Cardboard is one of the easiest materials to recycle, but also one of the most frequently contaminated. To ensure its proper reuse, it is important to follow some basic principles:

  • Empty and clean: Make sure to remove any product residue. The cardboard must be dry and free of organic matter.
  • Remove tapes and plastics: Remove adhesives, film, or labels. These materials must be separated before recycling.
  • Fold to optimize space: Fold the boxes and store them neatly to facilitate transport or storage.
  • Do not mix with dirty or greasy cardboard: Cardboard stained with oil or liquids is not recyclable in the blue container.
  • Reuse whenever possible: Many boxes can have more than one useful life, for example in internal shipments, returns or temporary storage.
  • Compact waste responsibly: If you handle large volumes, consider a clean point or specialized collection systems.

Tip: If only part of the box is contaminated, cut off the clean section and recycle it.

Recycling of packaging plastic

Because plastic is more diverse, it requires specific attention depending on the type. Below, we share how to handle the three most common types in logistics operations:

  • Transparent film (stretch): Remove it from the cardboard, make a compact ball and place it in the yellow container or clean point. If it is in good condition, it can be reused.
  • Bubble wrap: It can be reused several times. If damaged, dispose of it in the yellow container. Avoid mixing it with paper or cardboard.
  • Adhesive tapes and mixed plastics: These must always be separated from cardboard before recycling. Place them in the yellow container or, if you handle large volumes, take them to the recycling center.

Note: Regulations may vary by municipality. Check with your waste management provider for more information.

Benefits for your company

Implementing a proper recycling system in your operation has multiple advantages:

  • Waste reduction: Recyclable materials are reincorporated into the production cycle.
  • Resource optimization: Consumption of virgin raw materials and energy is reduced.
  • Regulatory compliance: Stay up-to-date with local waste management regulations.
  • Corporate image: Customers increasingly value sustainable practices.
