For that edge, there are two materials that are truly used: cardboard corner protectors (rigid, for pallets and boxes) and foam profiles (polyethylene foam, for delicate items). They don't do the same job. This guide tells you when to use each, what size makes sense, and how to place them.

What is the difference between a cardboard corner protector and a foam one?
Cardboard reinforces the corner and distributes the tension of the film; foam cushions the impact on a fragile item. If you put foam on the pallet or only cardboard on a thin frame, either the load will shift or the item will arrive marked.

When do pallet or box corners need protection?
Protection is needed when the edge is exposed to impacts, film, or the weight of what's on top; it's unnecessary in a small shipment that is already well-packed inside its box.

When they don't contribute
For small orders (cosmetics, clothing, accessories) or products already covered with bubble wrap and void fill material, corner protectors don't add value. Their domain is large, flat objects or those with exposed corners.
How are cardboard corner protectors used in palletizing?
They are placed on the four vertical edges, before tightening the film, so that the film doesn't cut the box cardboard and the load doesn't go out of square.
Many warehouses skip this step. When wrapping the pallet with stretch film, tension concentrates on the edges. If you tighten it, the film ends up cutting the cardboard. The boxes deform, the load shifts, and what's inside can arrive marked.
The cardboard corner protector does two things at once: it covers the edge and gives a bit of verticality to the pallet.
