How to Pack Wine Bottles for Shipping: A Complete Guide

Shipping wine bottles without them breaking is one of the most common packaging challenges. Whether it's for a winery distributing online orders, a gourmet shop sending gift sets, or an individual sending bottles to a relative, the process is the same: choose the right box for bottles , protect the contents well, and seal the package securely.

In this guide we explain step by step how to pack wine bottles for shipping by courier, with practical tips to avoid breakage and save on packaging material.

Why is it so important to pack wine bottles properly?

Glass is fragile and wine is liquid: a combination that doesn't forgive packaging errors. During transport, packages are subjected to impacts, vibrations, and changes in position. If the bottle isn't properly secured inside the box, the risk of breakage is high.

Furthermore, a broken bottle not only means the loss of the product, but also damage to the rest of the merchandise, customer complaints, and reshipping costs. Good packaging protects your wine and your profit margin .

Materials needed to pack wine bottles

Before you begin, make sure you have the following on hand:

Material Function Link
Bottle boxes with dividers Isolate each bottle and prevent contact between them. See bottle boxes
Bubble wrap Cushion impacts by wrapping each bottle See bubble wrap
Kraft paper or wrapping paper Extra layer of protection and gap filling See wrapping paper
Filler material (chips, crumpled paper) Fill empty spaces to prevent movement See filling
Quality seal Close the box securely. See seal

Step by step: how to pack wine bottles for shipping

1. Wrap each bottle individually

Cut a piece of bubble wrap about 50-60 cm long and wrap the entire bottle, from the base to the neck. Secure it with tape. If you don't have bubble wrap, you can use several layers of crumpled kraft paper .

Tip: Pay special attention to the neck of the bottle, as it's the most vulnerable area. Add an extra layer of protection to that part.

2. Place the bottles in a box with dividers

Boxes with internal dividers (mesh) are the best option for shipping wine. The cardboard dividers create individual compartments that prevent the bottles from touching each other during transport.

We have grid boxes for 1, 3, 6 and 12 bottles , all made of single or double wall corrugated cardboard depending on the protection requirements.

3. Fill in the blanks

Even if you use dividers, small gaps may remain between the bottle and the compartment walls. Fill with packing material (polystyrene chips, crumpled paper, or cardboard strips) until the bottle is completely immobile.

The golden rule: if you shake the box, you shouldn't hear any movement .

4. Reinforce the base of the box

The weight of the wine bottles (between 1.2 and 1.5 kg each) concentrates the load at the base. Reinforce the bottom with an additional layer of cardboard or bubble wrap and apply an H-shaped sealing strip (one lengthwise and two crosswise).

5. Close and seal properly

Close the box and seal it using the H-stitch technique on both the top and bottom. For shipments of 6 or more bottles, consider using stretch film around the box for added security.

6. Label the package

Place visible "FRAGILE" and "THIS SIDE UP" labels on at least two sides of the package. While not all carriers follow these instructions, they help reduce rough handling.

What type of box should I choose based on the number of bottles?

Amount Recommended box Observations
1 bottle Individual box with inner alveolus Ideal for gifts and single shipments
3 bottles Box with grid for 3 units. The best-selling option for gift sets
6 bottles Box with grid for 6 units. Industry standard for wine boxes
12 bottles Box with grid for 12 units. Use double-wall corrugated cardboard for the total weight (~18 kg)

All our bottle boxes include cardboard dividers and assembly instructions. If you need large quantities for your winery or shop, please see our terms and conditions for businesses .

Common mistakes when packing wine bottles

These are the mistakes we see most often and should be avoided:

  • Do not use spacers: placing several bottles together without a divider is the main cause of breakage. Direct glass-to-glass contact amplifies any impact.
  • Box too big: if the bottle moves around inside the box, it will get bumped. Choose a box that's the right size for your bottles.
  • Insufficient seal: a single strip of tape is not enough to support the weight of several bottles. Always seal in an H pattern.
  • Reusing damaged boxes: a box with creases or dampness loses up to 50% of its strength. For bottles, always use new boxes .
  • Forget the foundation: the bottom bears the entire load. Always reinforce it.

Sending bottles of wine by courier: which carrier to choose?

Most courier companies in Spain accept shipments of wine bottles, although it is worth noting:

  • Correos / Correos Express: They accept properly packaged bottles. Recommended for domestic shipments.
  • SEUR, MRW, GLS: standard parcel services that work well with boxes of bottles. GLS is our usual provider with 24-48 hour delivery.
  • Palletized transport: For shipments of more than 10-15 boxes (warehouses, distributors), it is more economical and safe to ship on a pallet with stretch film and strapping.

Important: Always declare the contents as "glass/fragile" when booking the shipment. Some insurance companies do not cover breakage if it has not been declared.

Bottle packaging for wineries and online stores

If you ship bottles of wine regularly, you'll want to optimize the process:

  • Standardize your boxes: always use the same box model to speed up packing. The most commonly used are the 6 and 12 bottle boxes with a grid .
  • Buy in bulk: Purchasing boxes and packaging material in bulk significantly reduces the unit cost.
  • Calculate the volumetric weight: bottles are quite heavy, so you'll usually pay for the actual weight. Use our volumetric weight calculator to compare.
  • Have seasonal stock: November-January is the peak season for wine shipments (Christmas, corporate gifts). Prepare your stock of cases in advance.
